About the thesis
The thesis examines how recognition and management of elder abuse can improve in acute hospital care. Elder abuse is described as a serious problem that often remains hidden, with forms including physical or psychological abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and sexual abuse. Hospitals, especially emergency departments, offer an early chance to notice signs.
The research identified physical signs, developed the ERASE tool and implemented a multidisciplinary care pathway. ERASE helps professionals recognise and document possible signs in a structured way and raises awareness; it proved workable and acceptable in daily hospital practice. The pathway encourages cooperation and communication among professionals and supports a person-centered care plan.
The findings offer practical guidance for better recognition of elder abuse and a more integrated approach in acute hospital care.
