Over het proefschrift
The thesis looked at results after cranioplasty, the operation that repairs the skull defect left by a craniectomy performed to lower intracranial pressure. It assessed outcomes in adults and children. In adults, autologous bone grafts were tied to more complications and a greater chance of further surgery than synthetic cranial implants; although the implants are not always cheaper, they were judged more cost-effective over time because fewer revisions were needed. The procedure had only a modest effect on quality of life, including appearance satisfaction, self-esteem, and concern about negative judgment.
The work also tested a new implant material combining glass fiber-reinforced composite with bioactive glass. Initial findings indicate the material might encourage new bone to form within a year after surgery.
