About the thesis
In multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, minimal residual disease can persist after treatment and cause relapse. Detection usually uses painful bone marrow biopsy. The thesis further developed a blood test tracking a protein unique to cancer cells. It rivals bone marrow biopsy at finding residual disease and is 1,000 times more sensitive than existing blood tests, while taxing patients less. It was made faster, cheaper, and easier to automate, enabling wider use.
