About the thesis
Growing metal demand increases pressure on biodiversity and ecosystem services while mining faces intensified scrutiny, highlighting the need for dependable monitoring data from impact assessment follow-up to guide decisions across mineral value chains.
The thesis investigates how to secure data quality in impact assessment follow-up to advance the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Using qualitative methods, the study draws on a literature review, field visits, document analysis, interviews, a focus group, institutional events, and a case analysis of Brazilian Amazon bauxite extraction and the aluminium supply chain, selected due to bauxite mining in forests and widespread aluminium use. The findings indicate a need for greater data integration and contextualization.
