About the thesis
The thesis compared laparoscopy with open surgery for large, complicated liver removals in cancer and benign disease. Two earlier large trials found laparoscopy better for small liver tumours, but removing half the liver or more was deemed too risky for a laparoscopic approach. The research offers sound evidence that such advanced cases can also be treated laparoscopically at specialised liver centres with experienced surgeons.
