About the thesis
This research examines why premature infants born at similar gestational ages experience varying health outcomes, focusing on infant sex and the biological causes of early labor. By analyzing numerous international studies, the thesis demonstrates that early birth is not uniform: maternal infections and placental complications are linked to differing postnatal risks. Male infants generally face greater vulnerability to mortality, severe eye problems, and chronic lung conditions, though this pattern does not hold for every complication. These insights could eventually help clinicians better evaluate risks and individualize care.
