About the thesis

Transarterial radioembolization delivers radioactive microspheres through the hepatic artery to target liver tumours while preserving healthy tissue. This thesis examines how adaptive, MRI-guided techniques can refine the therapy.

The research introduced an administration device for controlled microsphere delivery and an MRI quantification method to evaluate particle distribution and absorbed doses during treatment. Analyses emphasized the need for homogeneous radiation across tumours and provided insights into subsequent lung injury. Furthermore, an initial study in four patients with primary liver cancer showed that MRI-guided treatment safely enabled higher radiation doses than standard care, encouraging further development of personalized radioembolization.
