À propos de la thèse
As hip replacements become more common in younger, active individuals, implant failure from infection or aseptic loosening is a growing concern. Standard diagnostics usually identify these issues only after symptoms develop, delaying treatment and complicating revisions. The thesis examines smart implants featuring integrated sensors to achieve earlier warning.
Based on an assessment of 49 biomedical sensors and stakeholder input, acidity (pH) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) devices were chosen as promising candidates. Laboratory tests in environments mimicking hip conditions showed that both sensors can identify biochemical changes tied to infection and inflammation, while also uncovering performance obstacles within the hip joint.
