Uit de samenvatting
The dissertation examines how the heart's electrical activity evolves over the lifespan in congenital heart disease. Using signals taken directly from the heart during surgery, it finds early electrical deviations in children, before rhythm disturbances are evident. In adults, alterations in the heart chambers may play a part in producing atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that is frequent in this group.
The work also tracks adults with congenital heart disease for several years to see which factors accompany the onset or worsening of atrial fibrillation. It reports that standard heart tracings may help single out individuals whose risk is higher.
Overall, the studies add knowledge about how rhythm problems arise and advance in congenital heart disease. They may assist clinicians in detecting susceptible patients sooner, support longer-term follow-up, and inform care tailored to each person over time.
