Uit de samenvatting
The thesis concerns detecting, locating and characterising special nuclear materials and other actinides for nuclear security, safeguards, waste management, emergency response and environmental radiological surveying. Conventional passive detection often struggles when only small amounts are present, when materials are heavily shielded or when measurement conditions are complex.
It develops Neutron–Gamma Emission Tomography (NGET), an imaging method that relies on correlated fast neutrons and gamma rays from fission. Using fast liquid organic scintillators, the work covers the technique's theory, experimental testing, optimisation and application. Time and energy correlations between the emitted particles are exploited through Bayesian inference, allowing rapid three-dimensional localisation of neutron-emitting sources.
