From the abstract
The thesis examines how family background, school providers, and local school markets relate to final merit ratings in Swedish compulsory school, 1998–2022. Ratings are educational results and signals for upper-secondary selection.
It uses Swedish register and cohort data with descriptive and association analyses, fixed-effect regression, observed-versus-predicted comparisons, and propensity-score matching. It examines change over time and subject differences.
The first study finds that from 1998 to 2020, links between ratings and parental education and municipal median income grew stronger and varied by local school market. The parental-education link was strongest where independent schools were more common, and municipal income was similar.
