Uit de samenvatting
Canine Flank Alopecia (CFA) causes seasonal, often hyperpigmented hair loss on dogs' flanks during colder months. The course varies considerably, with spontaneous recovery in some animals and permanent baldness in others. This research investigated the mechanisms and management of the condition. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that melatonin implants were no more effective than placebo in halting recurrent hair loss, a finding complicated by the disease's tendency to resolve on its own. Genetic analyses in Rhodesian ridgebacks excluded the MLPH gene, while a genome-wide association study (GWAS) detected no single causative gene. CFA is therefore not a simple hormonal or monogenic disorder, but a complex condition disrupting hair follicle cycling through combined environmental factors and multiple genes.
