Over het proefschrift
The research examined care needs in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and whether mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) can help. Psychological symptoms, fatigue and sleep problems often accompany physical symptoms and reduce quality of life. The first part found that what worsens quality of life differs by age and sex: younger patients more often have mental health problems, older patients physical functioning, and women generally report lower quality of life. In severe fatigue, help-seeking depends on its severity, impact and patients' views, and on health professionals.
The second part suggests MBCT may ease anxiety and depression and may benefit fatigue, sleep and disease activity. It appears feasible, helped by peer support, online access and personal commitment, though time demands and disease impact can hinder it. The conclusion favors person-centered IBD care, with MBCT as an adjunct.
